[Advance Reservation Required] Special Route: Blue Zone Experience Course in Northern Okinawa

This journey is a special course to experience the Blue Zone in the northern part of Okinawa's main island. The Blue Zone is one of only five areas in the world recognized for its longevity and health. You can visit the Bise Fukugi Tree Road, the Bashofu Hall in Kijoka, Ogimi Village, and the Yanbaru Brewery, allowing you to experience the local culture, traditions, and the lives of the people who have lived here for generations.
*Note: This is a model course, and the introduced facilities require advance reservations. Please make your own reservations when participating. Experience fees and meal costs are not included in the service fee. Please pay according to each facility's regulations.

Arrive at the Bise Fukugi Tree Road. Walk through the tree-lined path and enjoy the traditional Okinawan landscape that serves as a windbreak.

Leave Bise Fukugi Tree Road and move to Kijoka, Ogimi Village.

Arrive at Kijoka, Ogimi Village. Walk through the village with a local guide to glimpse into the history and lives of the people (reservation required). Visit the Bashofu Hall, where you can observe the production process of Bashofu, the oldest textile in Okinawa (no reservation required).

After lunch, move to Yanbaru Brewery.

Tour of Yanbaru Brewery, a small distillery nestled in the great nature of Yanbaru, loved by the locals for many years. A guided tour by the Awamori makers is also available (reservation required).

Cultural experience such as shell ginger craft at Kijo Kasho School, a former elementary school that has been repurposed. You can enjoy a cultural experience using the plant 'shell ginger,' which has been closely tied to daily life in Okinawa for generations (reservation required).

Motobu Town NFT Route 01: Exploring Culture

This journey offers an experience that touches the heart of Motobu Town. It begins with a visit to the Ryukyu indigo dyeing studio “Aikaze”, nestled in the mountains of Izumi, Motobu Town, in the northern part of Okinawa Island. The studio carefully dyes with natural fermentation, using the mud indigo nurtured by indigo leaves. Surrounded by the wind of indigo, you are invited to feel the breath of tradition (advance reservation required).

The next stop is the Bise Fukugi Tree Road, where the village is surrounded by fukugi trees. More than just a windbreak, these trees stand as testimony to the town's continuous daily endeavors and its history. As you walk under the green shade of the fukugi trees, imagine the community spirit and the fishing lights of the sareibichi.

The cultural journey concludes in the street scenes of Motobu Town Old Market and the sacred atmosphere of Toguchi Shrine. At the market, you will encounter the vividness of Motobu Town's daily life and food culture, and at Toguchi Shrine, you will hear stories of traditional rituals, helping you understand the town's spirituality and the deep bonds within its community.

By traveling through this “Culture” story, you will see with your own eyes the rich culture that Motobu Town has cultivated and will have time to engrave its multifaceted charm into your heart.

Our story, which traces the shining jewel of the ocean off Motobu’s shore, begins at Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium. As you watch whale sharks swim languidly by and view the brilliance of coral reefs, Churaumi Aquarium will amaze you with the diversity of life in the ocean. In Okichan Theater at Ocean Expo Park, you will be amazed at Motobu’s rich ocean culture as you watch the dolphin show.

Walk or cycle along Fukugi Tree Road and experience the village of Bise and its harmony with nature, with stately houses surrounded by forest groves. In this spot where traditions such as sareibichi (drive fishing) live on, you can savor life atop the brilliant blue ocean.

At Sesoko Beach, enjoy striking views of Iejima Tatchu (Mt. Gusuku) against a backdrop of emerald-green sea. Here the natural beauty with which Motobu is gifted will reverberate in your soul.

Our seasonal story begins at Mt. Yae, where the cherry blossoms bloom first in Japan. This is the perfect spot to savor the gentle spring of Motobu. The mountains where the vivid Ryukyu winter cherry trees (Prunus campanulata) bloom bring the history and natural beauty of Motobu together in striking fashion.

Our next stop takes us to Motobu Kariyushi Market. Here you can get answers to all your questions about the history and food culture of Motobu from the market’s helpful guides, all while shopping for delightful “Made in Motobu” local products.

The spring is a great time to visit, as you can only enjoy the taste of sweet-and-sour tankan mandarin oranges in this season. The coastline at Sesoko Beach is a wonderful place to feel the changes the shifting seasons bring. Walk along the beach collecting seashells as you contemplate the bounty of nature.

At one time this spot was a quarry for travertine, a type of limestone regarded as a decorative stone. Travertine quarried on Sesokojima was used in the construction of the National Diet Building in Tokyo. Learn about the history of this former quarry. In this Seasonal Story, you’ll view the scenes, taste the flavors and feel the winds of history of Motobu.
